Favorite Artists Series: Michael Atkinson

10 December 2011 No Comment

Michael Atkinson is a West Texas artist from Lubbock. His interest in art started early in life, and he began painting as a child. After studying architecture at Texas Tech University, he pursued a career in teaching as well as working as an architect.

His art interests are widely varied and include buildings, animals, oceanscapes, and southwest landscapes. His watercolors are stunning. A signature item in his art is his technique with the essential use of white space. His style starts with fine detail at a center point and gradually and gradually becomes less detailed as it goes outward.

My personal favorites are his southwest landscapes. Many of these paintings have as a center point a horse and rider that are no larger than an inch or so. Progressing outward from there, the surrounding landscape becomes less defined, with sky that is even less defined. I like to describe it as “ abstract with incredible moments of detail”.
