Houston Astros New Ownership

21 November 2011 No Comment

As a longtime Astro/Colt 45/Buff fan, I am glad to see the purchase of the Astros finally take place.  We have endured the team’s  worst season in its existence, and there is no bright future immediately in sight.  Drayton McClane, the now previous owner, had clearly allowed the Astros to decay into a team that lost over 100 games this year.

Before we blame him too much, however, consider what he has brought us over the years.  We regularly made trips to the playoffs and one trip to the World Series.

Remember When? Houston Astrodome, 1964

The problem for the Astros in bringing these great seasons, was in the trading off of high quality young talent for a few big names.  Probably the most notable was the trade for Randy Johnson.  We gave up 2 top pitching prospects that proved to be major league stars.  In the end, we were unable to keep Randy Johnson because he really didn’t want to be here anyway.

Same with Carlos Beltran, and the list goes on.

From  the interviews with the new owner, Jim Crane, it is clear there will be no quick fix.  It is also clear that he is about to clean house with current management.  I think it will be an interesting next few years. Personally, I will follow a longstanding tradition in my family and attend the opening day game.  After that, we will just have to see….
